Capsheaf-Nyben provides Non-Destructive Testing and Reliability Services. Non-Destructive Testing, as a technology, is concerned with all methods of detecting and evaluating flaws in materials or structures. Flaws could have detrimental effect on the serviceability of the material or structure under service condition. Therefore, NDT is important in guaranteeing safe operation as well as quality control and assessing plant life.
Visual Examination is used to determine the surface condition of the part, reinforcement and undercutting of welds, alignment of mating surfaces, shape or evidence of leaking.
Leak testing is performed using gas and bubble formation testing, vacuum testing, the halogen diode detector, the helium mass spectrometer reverse probe the helium mass spectrometer hood methods and the pressure difference test.
Ultrasonic testing provides indications of surface and subsurface discontinuities, with the potential to determine the depth and exact size by the use of beams of mechanical waves (vibrations) of short wavelength and high frequency, transmitted from a small probe in contact with the specimen surface and detected by the same or other probes. These Ultrasonic pulses could indicate the presence, absence, and location of flaws, interface and/or discontinuities.
Penetrant Testing is used to detect surface discontinuities. The major advantage is that this method can be used on both ferrous and nonferrous materials. The application include the detection of surface discontinuities such as cracks, seams, laps, cold shuts, laminations and porosity. The indication can be viewed with visible daylight or using fluorescent method.
Pressure testing is the final test stage prior to the commissioning or reinstatement of a system. Individual skids, complete modular system, valves, spools, or pipeline can be pressure tested. This final proof testing is normally performed above the design pressure of the system, and various test mediums are employed including liquid and gas.
Eddy Current Testing
Eddy Current theory is based on the principles of electromagnetism. A coil carrying an AC current is placed on the magnetic test object. This generates circulating eddy currents in the test material close to the surface and these in turn affect the current in the coil by mutual induction. Flaws and material variations affect the strength of the eddy currents. The presence of flaws is therefore measured by electrical changes in the excitation coil. ET applications range from crack detection to metal sorting and weld inspection.
Magnetic Particle Testing
Magnetic Testing method can be used on ferromagnetic materials to reveal surface discontinuities and, to a limited degree, those located below the surface. It is an extremely cost effective method used primarily for the detection of cracks. Following magnetisation the specimen is covered with very fine iron particles either dry or suspended in a liquid. Surface breaking flaws distort the magnetic field causing local magnetic flux leakage that attracts the iron particles producing a build-up that can be seen visually.
Radiography provides a quality, cost effective, permanent record with high volume capabilities due to simple operation and portability. Applications include wall loss detection (profile radiography) and sizing in pipes and plate through to manufacturing defects in welds, forgings castings etc

Positive Material Identification (PMI)
This is a process used to determine the chemical composition of materials. The test identifies the alloys that make up a particular material. The purpose of this NDT method is to ensure that only materials that are specified as part of the design requirements are supplied and used for production.
Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL)
This method can detect corrosion at an early stage when the pit depth is only 21% of the tube wall, regardless of heavy deposits in the tubes. As for tube end grooving, even if it is located as close to a half-inch from the tube end, there is no better and faster technique. The aluminium fins don’t pose any problem as they are non-magnetic and don’t influence an MFL reading.
The purpose of vendor audits is to verify that vendors and their sub-vendors appear to be capable of fulfilling the requirements of the purchase order.

Capsheaf-Nyben offers experienced personnel and Heat Treatment Machines to serve this purpose. During production welding, heat treatment may be required to relief stress with the overall aim of removing residual stresses that may have been generated during welding. Stress relieving generally aids in the removal of or reduction of the risk of brittle fracture after welding as well as stress corrosion, among other metallurgical problems associated with welding. These thermal treatments therefore assist in assuring weld quality, performance and integrity.
